How to rent the Wien Mobil Bikes

The Wien Mobil bikes are Vienna’s bike sharing system. They are a fun and inexpensive way to get around the city and in German, they are called "Wien Mobil Rad".

The Wien Mobil Bikes are equipped with

  • 7-8 gears

  • a customizable saddle

  • a front luggage rack

  • some bikes have a child seat

  • a frame lock as well as a combination lock.

How to find a bike

You can find the Wien Mobil Bikes at 240 bike stations in Vienna.

To see where these stations are, you can use

But to rent the bikes you have to use the nextbike app.

Register

First thing to do, is to register for Nextbile Which is the company that operates the Wien Mobil Bikes. The registration is free.

The easiest way to do that is to download the nextbike App and register there.  You can also register on the nextbike website.

Rent

Then, renting a bike is pretty straightforward. You just open the Nextbike app, select "Rent a bike," and scan the QR code on the bike.

Reserve

When it's busy, it might be a good idea to reserve your bike in advance. You can do this in the app for free up to 15 minutes before your you want to use the bike.

Pause your Ride

You can also pause your ride. For example, if you want to see something or simply take a coffee break. To pause, activate "Park, bike" in the app and lock the bike with the frame lock. When you're ready to continue, just choose "Stop Parking". Please note that while you pause the ride, the rental costs continue.

Return

You can return your bike at one of the bike stations. At physical station like these, you just push the bike into the docking station and close the frame lock. If it worked, you'll hear a beep and the app shows the return. It's best to check that right away, because if the bike is not properly locked, a fee of 25 EUR may apply.

When the bike station is full, you can return the bike to a nearby bike rack . There you lock the bike with the frame lock and the combination lock. Since the combination lock is just intended to fixate the bike, so it doesn’t fall over, you will find the code for the lock directly on the bike.

It is important to make sure that the bike is as close to the bike station as possible. Because if the distance is too far, you will have to pay 20 EUR for wrong parking. Of course that fee also applies, if you park your bike somewhere in the city outside of a bike station.

In addition to the physical station, there can also be virtual stations. They don’t have a docking station and  you simply lock the bike with the frame lock and the combination lock.
